Placement hours calculator
UK student nurses need at least 2,300 hours of supervised practice learning to register. Enter your hours below to see how many you have left. The 600-hour simulated-learning cap is handled for you. Nothing is saved; it all runs in your browser.
2,300 hours to go
0 of 2,300 counted (0%)
Simulated hours count toward your total only up to the 600-hour cap; the rest of your practice hours must come from real placements.
How the calculation works
Your counted total is your real placement hours plus your simulated hours up to the 600-hour cap. Hours remaining is simply your required total minus what's counted. Because at least 1,700 of the 2,300 hours must come from real placements, simulated hours beyond 600 don't reduce your target, and the calculator flags them so there are no surprises later.
Always treat your university's Practice Assessment Document as the source of truth for what counts. This tool is a quick estimate, not an official record.
Frequently asked questions
- How many placement hours do UK student nurses need?
- At least 2,300 hours of supervised practice learning, within a minimum 4,600-hour programme (2,300 practice plus 2,300 theory) set by the NMC. Up to 600 of the practice hours may be simulated.
- Do simulated hours count in the calculator?
- Yes, up to the 600-hour cap. Enter your simulated hours separately and the calculator counts them toward your 2,300 target up to 600, then flags any beyond the cap as not counting.
- Is my data saved anywhere?
- No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, stores nothing, and sends nothing anywhere. Refreshing the page clears it.
